I've seen answers like that, and I tend to give them a thumbs up because I feel for answers like those....

Surely it comes down to how relevant the answer is. Remember a thumbs up indicates you felt a good answer was given to the question.
If the question is "Do you like dogs?" and the answer is "Yeah, my cat died three days ago" then that would be a thumbs down.
The simple way for me is to ask myself if I were asking the question would I find the answer helpful. Thats the best way to decide.

I just give the thumbs up in support of their losses, I understand that and just want to show my thoughts are with them. A thumbs down would be a negative and that would not be a good thing in their time of need. :)
