What's the best way to break into stand-up comedy?

How should you go about becoming a stand-up comedian?

My brother is a stand up comedian and the best thing he said was to go to amateur nights get a good solid routine down and then start making contacts... It is a lot about who you know. He also took a class at the very beginning of his career where he got to meet some writers from Saturday night live and local comedians as well so... maybe look into that in your area. He is in the Chicago area.

I used to do stand up years ago. Best way is to:
- Find a comedy club near you that has an open mike night.
- go a few times to watch
- write 5 minutes of material
- perform at open mike night.
- keep writing and get a really good 5 minute act together.

Fall down alot.Make sure you're dressed up like a very important person...Kinda like a boss.Then walk on stage and fall down a whole lot.That would be a good starter.Finally come out like you're gonna sing something like a big show tune similar to When the Shark bait ect ect ...Something jazzy like that as big sounding as the song New York ,New York but not that song,make sure someone Qs the CD up for ya.Then in about 10 sec wave your hands for them to stop the cd in discussed and say what the Hell am I singing for....Jeez.Fix your suit and tie and continue.

Always work on your routine - your nothing without it. Then go to comedy clubs and ask if they have an ametuer nite, lots of them do.
