The most economic way would be to walk on foot.

start from KL, get a bus [ from Puduraya or Pekeliling/Putra station ], its only one hour plus [ depend on traffic condition ] journey up to Genting, after you have done with Genting then get back to KL to board a train, try daytime departure so that you wouldn't miss the beautiful/ fabulous country side scenery where you may never be able to witness on your car traveling journey, though it may take much longer time than going by bus !

Don't miss the cable car ride, islands hopping n round the island with rented car while in Langkawi ! Food may be a little expensive !

if you are not going anywhere during week end or public holiday, advance booking of hotel/chalet is not neccessary !

Enjoy your holiday n cheer !

quite easy, stop at central market then take LRT to tmn melati station. then take the bus to genting lah. after that you can buy the bus ticket to pudu raya and take the bus to kuala kedah and take ferry to langkawi.
