Back in my day and age, those people were simply called "weird", and yes, I was one of them. I didn't listen to the same music they did, I didn't wear Chic jeans (showing my age), I didn't care about the latest movie, etc. I didn't want to be misunderstood. I just was.
Do I think some kids go out of their way to be different? Yes, and that can be dangerous if they do the extreme like cutting and such. But do all of those kids that are pigeon-holed into those titles go out of their way just to get a label? No. Some kids are simply different. And different can be good too. Most of the kids I was friends with have turned out to be much more insightful and productive as adults by marching to the beat of their own drummer. I don't see a darned thing wrong with that.

I don't really understand the question.... I've been called a mosher before, that's a new one on me, emos have been around for a while and goths have been for ages but what exactly is a mosher? Yes, I have been in a mosh pit, is that the only criteria I have to meet to be a mosher, or is it more of a mentality and dress-sense thing?
I think a lot of the people trying to be different all end up the same, emos for example, all non-comforming, and yet they end up all dressing in pretty much the same way (The emo song: 'You'd be non-conforming too if you looked just like me'). There's nothing wrong with being different, and yet people always somehow end up trying to be the same as others, just to fit in and so they are accepted and have friends. I guess there's nothing wrong with that but it seems to show some sort of weakness of character to me, I am perfectly happy being who I am and wearing what I wear, which is not really the same as anyone else I know (I wear a lot of different stuff but none of it is extreme or anything - no black makeup or gothic vampire stuff, I just wear baggy jeans a band shirt, or a red t shirt and black trousers, I wear whatever the hell I feel like, not in order to belong to a set group of people).
Me and my friends are a pretty mis-matched group - one of my friends is kind of punk, one is intellectual and smart-looking, one is a geek, one is a surfer, one is an emo, one is camp and vain, etc etc, we're all pretty different so we don't have to dress or act in a certain way to fit in with each other. So I guess we're all unique, but we're normal too.
There's no point trying so hard to be different and non-conforming because even if you're different to the majority, you'll still end up being in a group of like-minded people. I think the best way to be unique is to stop caring whether you're unique or not, stop caring what people think of you and stop caring what people are wearing - be friends with people you like, and to hell with the rest of them!
As for being misunderstood, that's just a teenage thing that most people go through. People like to pity themselves and if they can persuade themselves that no one understands them because they are different and unique, it helps them have a reason to be miserable. Also if you are misunderstood because you're 'different', it is better than being misunderstood because you're a loser. As long as you've got a few friends, it doesn't really matter if most people understand you or not. What's to 'understand' anyway? When it boils down to it most people are pretty similar, or at least similar to the people within their social group. As soon as you start being non-conformist, you join a group of other non-conformists and hence start conforming. Just get on with life and don't care so much about social trends, stick with your friends, dress how you like and don't become a chav :P

I don't think any of the above people are stupid or weird, especially "chavs." Being a former goth wanna-be myself, I just wanted to dress how I felt at the time. It may be a fashion statement or maybe they want to wear what they want to wear because of how they feel about themselves or society. I don't think anyone is "normal" anyway but I think everyone wants to be accepted by some group or another. In my opinion, people who dress differently just want to express themselves. Since most of the people that dress that way are in their teens to their 20-something's. they are probably going through some phase in their life. I agree as long as they are not hurting anyone or themselves, I don't see anything wrong with a person wanting to express themselves. Some people call it a "rebellious" stage but whatever the reason, they DO want to be noticed, even though they may say that they don't want the shock value of what they look like.

As_It_Is nailed it I think! You'll never see fights breaking out in an alternative club and I can walk around Camden at night with no worries. I wouldn't say I'm trying to be unique, that's impossible. Every fashion has been done time and time again and there are goth clothing labels that are as desirable as trendy designer labels.

Typically, Chavs are positioned in the Lower Classes of British Society. However, some are even in Middle Class, but usually because they find "Chavism" appealing, for example bling, RnB and clothes.
Anyway, because there are so many, because they choose to have large families, because typically they are stupid they live off the government and therefore the middle and upper classes.
Role models include Jade Goody.

Whats normal? stupid sheep? who smokes too much? drinks to much? ignorant?
What I have noticed over more then a decade is these tyrpws tend to be better people in that when they go out clubbing they are far more into their music and scene.
They are not simply into just getting as drunk as possible.
You don't get office politics like culture in these sorts of scenes, likewise psy trance hippies.
They don't go around actuing hard and threatening or hurting others to feel big. There is no respect at all for that and gangster behavour... its looked down with disgust.
They look after each other. They have values where the strong look after the weak not prey on them or bully them like normal chavs do. Likewise the old look after the young and more experienced after the less experienced.
They tend to be deep, and in concerts fun and get up on dance floors sober and love their music. Wild in their moshpits but not hurting others... you fall all those around pick you up and see how you are.
Tend not to be heavy drug users like normals are ... Yet are not boring in that more likly to be into extreme sports, travel and get involved in other cultures.
Tend to be left wing see society as one where people look after each other not compete.
Many you will find are highly creative, free thinking, problem solvers.
And its depth which makes them feel more good or bad.
They are less into fame more wanting to be good creatives so whould take pride in the music they make. Not simply see it as a means of money.
If rich will tend to stay down to earth in what they are into.
Along with heavey metallers, death metallers, rockers, headbangers, etc... they are more likly to help you and have no reason to hurt you... Only ever seen one into self harm.
The girls tend to be fiesty and coupled tend to be close and affectionate.
Their nightclubs are like their church, and mean a great deal and as they get older they keep going to the same places and value them as those times meant a great deal to them. Bringing younger siblings to the same places.
Rave would be www.accessallareas.org
Goths tend to be very deep, very emotional and form strong relationships, artistic creative with their clothes involving great detail. Paganisic in culture, linking horror films, vampire mythology and architecture. There are common links between goths and the fetish scene but some are some are not... dress sense similar.
May be into wicca as its welcoming and peaceful and deep.
Goths are a subbranch of rock guitar music. tends to be highly skilled deep musicans who take their music seriously and often combined with dance music and industial (intense meatl sound characterised by bands like Nine Inch Nails.
TELL YOU WHAT WOULD BE GREAT FOR YOU IF IN LONDON WOULD BE TO GO AND SPEND A DAY LOOKING AROUND CAMDEN MARKET OR GO TO GOTH NIGHTCLUBS.
ALL YOUR ANSWERS WOULD BE THERE.
Would love film like the crow or Underworld. (Actually rent out Underworld and the crow)
Instances like the school shooting in Americ would have benn clearly due to the treatment they got in the school... ie excessive long term emotional and phsical bullying and isolating.
Ie if people had been friendly with them... said goths would have been friendly back... if you kick somone over and over eventually they lash out back. its that simple only these kids not being aggressive would have bottled it up till they simply burst with tragic effects only it would have been the shot students own fault for acting like jade and palls in the big Brother house.
Overall you have nothing to worry from goths unless you abuse them constantly. Which would apply to anyone.
Often expressing feelings inside angsty with growing up and often havin felt hurt before.
Most likly art students or other creative students and highly talented
