I am thinking about visiting the city. Are people mean to you if you don't speak French?

I live in Montreal and I dont speak French (just moved here) People are normal to very friendly toward me.

Some cashiers would roll their eyes on me though when they speak to me in French and I would say en Anglais sil vous plait. But other than that Montreal is the best.

You can go to Mont Royal Park, the view is awesome from up there (Bruce Willis shot one of his movie there). Old Port is very nice to visit as well. Take a walk around, and see how Old Port is just European. When you have time don't forget to go to the Botanical Garden, plenty things to admire there.

St. Laurent street is heaven. From China town to North, plenty of differ kinds of stores you can shop til you drop haha. (After the Old Port, China town, and just go North)

In Downtown, there are museums and such.

While in downtown area, dont forget to go to the underground city.

in wikipedia.org there are some good ideas of places to go for fun and such if you want to know more.

Have fun in Montreal!

Montréal is one of the world's best cosmopolitan and multi-cultural cities with hundreds of things to do. But, other than the museums and clubs and restaurants near McGill and the Bell Centre the more French speaking east and northeast sides from downtown has somewhat more of interest than the predomininately English speaking west side, because, to be frank, the west side is invaded each weekend by rowdy American high school and college age kids who come up here to get drunk (18 year old drinking age and 16-17 years olds rarely carded) and more easily get laid (Canada is much more libertine than the USA, and Montréal probably the most of all), so the near west side has among its commercial entertainment places a greater proportion of rowdy bars and sex clubs.

As for language, most everyone is bi-lingual (or tri -lingual). If you are American or a Brit, however, and at a place in the mostly French parts of the city, it will be polite (and appreciated) if you begin conversation with "Pardonnez-moi. Je suis américain/anglais. Ma française est mauvais."

By the way other than eating at some of our great French (and other ethnic) restaurants, make sure you go to one of our delis to try our famous bagels and our "smoked meat" (our version of lean pastrami from the brisket) sandwiches. Better than New York City's! And, if you are American: at our French and Quebecois-French restaurants you will usually find one or two delicious game dishes and occasionally a horsemeat dish on the menu; game is still rarely offered in the states and horsemeat never. Take advantage whilst you are here! Bon appêtit!

No it seems to be alright if you are American, but try apologising once in a while, because they arent that "tight" with their English homies.
To visit you can go to lots of places -
honorable mention -
Little Italy (Jean Talon Metro stop)
China Town/ Rue St. Antoine (Place D'Armes Metro Stop)
McGill (Mcgill Metro stop)
Cote Vertu (Cote Vertu Metro Stop)
Place des Arts (Place Des Arts metro stop)

people should be alright, however there might be some people who will see an english license plate (ie New York or Toronto) and start honking their horns and swearing out the windows
other than that, Montreal is the best

cheers

I just went to Montreal last month with my boyfriend for a long weekend, actually! It's a really fun city. I'd recommend walking around McGill University's campus for some great photo ops, going shopping at the Underground City, going to a Canadiens game if you can afford it (if not, go to the sports bar at the Bell Centre and cheer them on if there's a game), going up to Mount Royal for great panoramic photo ops, walking around Old Montreal, go ice-skating, etc. There's so much to do!

I recommend strongly that you cross the Canadian border with a passport!

They all capable had a Wrestlemania in Montreal. It wasn't very humorous and that is have been the Montreal screw activity happened. If they have been to have a moment Wrestlemania there John Cena or Jeff Hardy or might be even the Undertake might get screwed out of the name by way of Vince.

No French, no problem , Just let each person you are dealing with no you are an American. It is when they think you are an English speaking Canadian that they get testy. Lots of bars and Museums. Best Metro (Subway) system around.
