People say that cheerleading isn't a sport but I think it is. I have been a cheerleader for 3 years and even though people say you don't work hard in cheerleading you really do.

It depends on the group of girls (or guys) and the school. The cheerleaders at my school did not do any physical activity- they just moved their arms around, clapped, and shouted. They sort of looked like synchronized Price is Right contestants. Anyways, there was no dancing, tumbling, or gymnatstics of any kind. They didn't go to competitions or do much of anything, except spend their "practices" painting banners or windows, and using the school's sports budget for new uniforms that showed more leg. So at my school- hardly qualified as a sport.

If the exact opposite is true, then yes, it is a sport.

Yes, it is a sport. It is not in the common category of sport like: football, baseball, basketball, ice-skating, etc., however, it is a very tough skill to do and gymnastically challenging as well.

I was not a Cheerleader in High School (guess I wasn't good enough), but I was a Miami Dolphin's Cheerleader. The routines were more dance focused verses the gymnastics of High School or College Cheerleading. I have been fascinated when I watch "Making the Squad" for the Dallas Cowboy's Cheerleaders and just how hard it is. It reminds me of my Cheerleading days as well. It is very vigerous and yet you still have to look pretty, smile, remember your routines, inspire the audience, etc.

I think I heard that they are considering making it an olympic sport? Not sure, but think so?

Finally, good for you for being there 3 years. You must be good not to get cut. It is hard and anyone that tells you otherwise has evidently never done it!

I think of cheerleading more as a form of dancing, which also requires you to work hard.

A sport is a competition which has scoring, possession, offense and defense. Cheerleading does not include these aspects of a sport.

ALL of my nieces are cheerleaders and though they spend hours practicing and do go to competitions, I certainly would NOT consider it a "sport". It is more of an "activity"!

A group of us "power walk" daily........... should "that" be considered a sport?
