The great depression is over. Should the government stay out of the economy? If we were to end subsidies to inefficient farms, airlines, and auto companies would they be more competitive internationally? Should we abolish the minimun wage and welfare? Would these measures improve the economy or would they hurt our society?

Defintely not. The already rich and successful would prosper even more, while the already poor and unsuccessful would be even more immersed in poverty, with no way to get out, and pretty much no way to survive. Without government programs like welfare that help the poor, how are they supposed to get food and shelter if they have no way of getting a job that pays? The country would be divided and only the rich would benefit.

They would hurt our society. They were put there for a reason. It's a screwball article of religious faith that in an economy totally unregulated things will naturally all work out for the best. Experience shows otherwise. The government,as the agent of the People, msut act as a referee in the economy.

We DO need SOME government help, because it would otherwise destroy the middle class.

However, I do not think the government should bail out ANY company. Southwest is the only airline that has good business sense, and they are the only airline that has not been bailed out by the government. This just demolishes their desire to improve, because the government will help them out anyway.

The best cure would be to change a 'federal reserve note' into a 'united states note' this way you could place currency that would gain in value rather then loss it. :)
