I know it has to do with the strange and charmed quarks, but I don't know exactly.

Theres really only 2 quarks, up and down, with a baryon and lepton number, and charges of +2/3 and -1/3 respectively. each quark has a weak isospin assigned to it after that, which ends up giving 3 different generations of quarks. the flavor basically denotes the relation of these things together to give distinct names to the quarks...so a charmed quark is just an up-type with certain properties and a strange is a down-type with certain properties....note to poster below...take the time to learn more about quarks. I don think you understand the distiction between quark flavors or how it works. read the section on flavour in the link below. There are 2 types of quarks and 6 flavours. flavour determines the value.

Hadrons (a class of subatomic particle that includes protons and neutrons) are made of quarks.

There are in fact SIX quarks, usually organised into 3 pairs - up/down, top/bottom, charm/strange. Each has a fractional electric charge of 2/3 or -1/3 repectively for the pairs as shown here and what is known as a color charge. Each also has an antiparticle. The names of quarks are arbitrary.

Quarks are bound together by the color force, which is transmitted by exchange of particles called gluons which also have color (this color is not the same as colors of light - its just a name given to a proerty of quarks and gluons). When a quark emits a gluon its color changes to conserve color charge. So quarks in a hadron madly exchange gluons to stay stable.

Strange and charm are types of quarks. They are building blocks of other particles. They're not around naturally but can be synthesized in high energy particle collisions. Strange and charm cannot be measured and the names are arbitrary. They could have been named salami and peperoni and had the same meaning; it represents no physical quantity. Try here -

Quarks ------------- In 1963, theoretical physicist Murray Gell-Mann necessary a recognition for his thought for the construction blocks of protons, neutrons and suitable subatomic debris, until eventually then regarded as indivisible. He settled on quark, a be conscious that mixes a canines's bark with a sea gull's squawk and that for the duration of German skill curd, the typical constituent of cheese. Gell-Mann's quarks, which originated as a mathematical glimmer in his suggestions, have considering been substantiated in many experiments, even with the undeniable fact that no person — for motives inherent in the character of quarks — has yet tasted, touched, seen or in any way at as quickly as reported one. in accordance to QCD, quarks are available in six "flavors" — up, down, unusual, appeal, backside and good (in ascending order via mass) — that combination in different mixtures to sort many distinctive species of the subatomic particle zoo. the massive debris of the nucleus, protons and neutrons, are bundles of three quarks. 2 united statesand a down make a proton, an up and a pair of downs a neutron.
