because most of us are ignorance. we tend to put down or make fun of things that we don't understand or know little of the subject. @ first, all i thought was that all australians look and act like paul hogan and eat a bbq shrimps. we'll label anything that we know little of. not only aussy, but to any nationality. think about it. if i say chinese..... you're thinking of.....

I think to say that MOST people think that is a huge generalisation, and then to go on talking about our crime rate and homeless levels...... Televisions always uses stereotypes to sell things and to say that most people buy into these stereotypes is just ridiculous, it's like me saying that everyone believes that Scottish people all wear kilts and live in castles playing the bagpipes but as i believe people are slightly more openminded than this, i wouldn't never assume that this was true.

Excusme, It is my absolute dream to even just visit Australia (and I live in England). If anything, we are the bad country, and it's not just me that thinks like that, most people I know dream of visiting Australia and two have actually moved there. You are so lucky and my stereotype of you are people who are laid back, chilled, and everything else.
As for the kangaroo thing, for us the annoying thing is double decker buses. I've never travelled on one in my life and I don't plan to! But people assume it's all we travel in - that or black cabs. (I've never travelled in one of those either).
We are the country associated wiith high teenage pregnancy, high crime, high congestion, etc etc. It's all bad. You should be so happy to live in a country like Australia and noone I know thinks you are like what you have just described.
Anyway.... don't get me wrong... Britain is a nice place I'm just jealous of your extremely laid back way of life!!

G'day mate ( couldn't resist) - Maybe its the Outback restaurant commercials??? I saw Muriel's wedding (the funniest movie ever) and didn't see any kangaroos hopping around. I live in Oklahoma and everyone thinks the indians are still attacking and that we all live on farms and ride horses to work

if u think u have a stereotyping problem, please check out my avatar !fact is,EVERY culture and ethnicity is subject to various stereotypes, some bad, some good. in addition to being african-american,which comes with its own baggage, the rest of the world sees my country as a bunch of idiotic george bush-loving thugs who cant wait to kill iraqi civilians.do u think thats who I am?i have strived all my life to be thoughtful and peaceloving, but the worlsd assumes i am a bloody idiot, that i want to kill people, etc.i am intelligent and widely travelled, and the only stereotype i have of australians,is that,on the whole, they seem admirably outgoing.is that so horrible?the "crocodile hunter" was hugely popular throughout the world, thats why people make the australia/croc connection.if u really think u are the victim of overwhelming prejudice,hey-try being black!!!!!!!!!!!!! trust me,u have NO idea !!!!!!!

You said it yourself. TV and movies promote stereotyping. Canada has the same problem especially Quebecois, Don`t you know that you are forced to speak French or else. Besides the usual ones you`ve heard we are also jealous Yankee wannabes! LOL
