apart from ginger baker and buddy rich, all the drummers mentioned here are overrated as hell.... ESPECIALLY lars ulrich, i could play him off the stage, his technique is average at best, his speed in non existant.... hes just.... crap.

real drummers;

Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
Virgil Donati - Independant drummer
Thomen Stauch - Ex Blind Guardian, Savag Circus
Vinnie Paul - PanterA
Horgh - Immortal, Hypocrisy
Amon amarths drummer
Anders johannsson - Hammerfall, but its his solo stuff u need to listen to
Nick Menza - ex megadeth
Dave Lombardo - slayer....

theres many more.... 90% of these mentioned here by others are horrible....

and ppl saying john bonham is the greatest drummer ever need teir eyes and ears tested.... hes one of the most average drummers ive ever heard in my time listening to music...

ppl think that because something is old, its good... this simply is not true..

and that travis barker is nothing special at all, a drummer who plays standard beats and fills, with no real techncal challenge or uniqueness, he is not particularly fast or skillful.

The drummers i mentioned have skills ranging from impeccable wrist control, precise grooves and fills, thunderous double kick mixed with a little finesse, the ability to improvise live and make songs actually better, and in the case of BG's thomen stauch the ability to make the song depend on the drums, this man doesnt write drum tracks, he makes songs with his drums, SUCH a gifted drummer.... without him the song sounds stale and boring, with him, its amazing.

and im a pro drummer of some years myself so i know what im talking about.

best ever probably Buddy rich, Virgil Donati and mike portnoy.... technically flawless

I will always have a fondness for Ringo Starr. He's not the greatest drummer in the world but to this day he is terribly under rated. He was unique and before him, no other drummer sounded like him.

Mr. Yammaha of The Kreeps is pretty amazing. Best drummer I've ever worked with.

erm to me, the greatest drummer has to be able to balance between his/her technicality and speed, without affecting their band music/style..

so IMHO, it has to be Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater.. I have been amazed by his personality and virtuosity..
he can very quick at times, either with his drumsticks or double pedals.. and he can be quite technical as well.. but he is no match to the 'masters of technicality' like Morgan Ågren, Tomas Haake [Meshuggah], and Danny Carey [Tool]...

but there will be no titles such as 'the greatest' because every drummer has their own style, speed, and personality..
Travis Barker wouldnt play like Travis Smith [Trivium]..
Jason Bittner [Shadows Fall] wouldnt play like Ringo Starr..

This is because drummers are fit for their own music.

The greatest drummer of all time was John Bonman of Led Zeppelin, but he died while choking on his own puke after a few to many drinks.
R.I.P. Bonzo.
