I am from Yorkshire, and have many friends and colleagues from Lancashire.
We pretend not to like each other, it is friendly banter. We say things like, "The only good thing to come out of lancashire is the M62 motorway".
It all stems from the war of the roses, when we were at civil war with each other. The White rose of York against the red rose of Lancashire.

You have to look in the history books. Yorkshire and Lancashire had the "war of the roses". Scotland had an auld alliance with France against the English which is why Scottish people like the French and dislike the English and why the English dislike the French. It all goes back hundreds of years but for some reason keeps going..... silly really isn't it.

There are all sorts of regional tensions in the UK. North vs. South, Newcastle vs. Sunderland, Scotland vs. England. Liverpool FC vs. Everton FC, Glasgow FC vs. Rangers FC.

Most of these stem from historical events, some from political allegiances and some from a religious standpoint. Usually it's just good banter and a way of showing the pride you have in your region.

As for saying it doesn't bother 'non-white' people, I think you're being a tad stereotypical. I know many 'non-white' Brits (and 1st generation immigrants) who've taken on a regional identity as will fight their corner just as voraciously as those whose families have lived in a region for generations.

I'm from Lancashire and have no problem with Yorkshire. I like Yorshire tea, the city of York and Sean Bean. I even had a girlfriend from Yorkshire. Regionalism is just more pathetic self-indulgence from racist dum dums.

Its just a joke. I'm from Yorkshire and I've got no problem with the manks and lancs - its just a bit of banter. Just like northerners calling southerners 'pansys' and 'soft'. (which they are.)

Human beings are pack animals. Our ancestors lived in groups and had to protect themselves from attack from other tribes. We have never lost this instinct. Look at football supporters, street gangs, fan clubs etc etc for other examples of this behaviour..
