I believe it has been stated, by himself and others, that he has been diagnosed Bi-polar, and used heroin and other substances to self-medicate for quite a while before he was "official". His behavior certainly is par for the course where that is concerned. Many famous creative people through history suffered from mental illness, especially hypo-mania, so the big question is always...would they have been so creative without that influence? A whole other endless discussion, that. It also explains the long wait for "Chinese Democracy" which may never be completed depending on his mood swings, never satisfied as to it's "perfection".

He had more issues going on besides the drugs. He was on meds and was commited for a while due to paranoia among other things...
