It surprises a lot of people that New York is nearer to the equator than Rome but the reason we're a bit warmer in this bit of the hemisphere is the Gulf Stream which transports warm air up from the Gulf of Mexico and, believe it or not, the Scilly Isles in the UK can grow sub-tropical plants as they're directly on it. Wind variations ensure that most of Western Europe benefits.

You don't think it gets cold in Europe? Try spending a winter in northern Scandanavia. To answer your question, I think it probably has to do with the trade winds from Europe.
