Certain players will see their minutes cut, but a complete benching is very rare. If anyone is going to get a game or two off, it's usually the goaltender, since they're obviously a huge key to playoff success. Position players are unlikely to be rested for a whole game unless they've got a minor injury or something chronic that they want to rest before the playoff run.
I don't think hockey coaches want to mess too much with their lineups late in the season for fear of losing chemistry between lines. It's the same story as in football and basketball, where you want your starters out there at least part of the time to stay sharp.

Sometimes just before playoff time the teams will have players with an "undisclosed injury". There is rumour that this is really a way to sit players so they are healthy for the playoffs. This may also be a way to psyche out the oppostion. eg. If the Leafs finish eighth in the East and Buffalo 1st and Mats Sundin goes down with an indisclosed injury just before the playoffs the Sabres may feel it will be no problem to beat the Leafs. Then Sundin comes back during the first game. Scotty bowman was famous for this.

well when you say bench a player that means the players is not pulling his own, so the coach will bench the player for a period or a game its happened many times. but yes some teams have given a day or two off on star players just to give them a rest but sometimes also just cause they are injured a little and there resting the injured leg or whatever..

good alright to begin off i disagree with you i play institution hockey wherein you're now not believe to combat and i've performed juniors which you'll combat in and alot of the groups these days like having a couple of enforcers at the workforce now not "goons" generally i dont drop the gloves except i have got to a few of the fights are simply to get your workforce pumped up and into the sport if you're wasting. "These men absorb a roster spot for extra proficient men within the minors" for an illustration the rangers have a couple of men so they can drop the gloves however should you appear at their roster they've 14 forwards and should you holiday that down they've two forwards that pass out and can combat and four traces of talent avid gamers so if their is a extra proficient man within the minors they're their for a intent. and a further factor is that you just stated "You might have much less top sticking, and many others, roughing, and many others, should you did away with combating," i combat i and i've much less penalty minuetes then so much men on my workforce extra different men get consequences for tripping and top sticking then i achieve this i wouldnt say that the "goons" make the league have extra of the ones consequences. that's simply my opinion

Of course time will cut down a little. Only if they lock the spot in though and that will be hard in the East. If they lock the playoffs they will proably cut it a little but not much, unless someone has a hot stick.

I've seen teams rest their overworked stars towards the end of the season. Not always for whole games, but sometimes even just giving them fewer shifts in games that are already decided or don't matter in the standings.

He doesn't bench them, just shortens their playing time to rest them but still play and keep up their skills for playoffs, he'll play his fourth liners more to get the prepared for next year and give the good guys a rest.

"Bench" may be too harsh a word
"Rest" is a better term
If the outcome of the game is irrelevant,
there's no sense in risking a star player

as in any sport when they can rest the vets for the playoofs, they certainly will. never a doubt about this if their playoff postion is secured.
