If you don't want people to know you have done something wrong...you should have thought of that before you did it. If you were in jail for , say, fighting, I might hire you anyway. But if you stole things, would I want you cleaning my house around my stuff? No. If a guy goes to jail for rape, would you want him working with your Mother or Daughter? I wouldn't.
If you learned from your mistake and go straight, great. But if I am going to be around you, then I have the right to know you might be less trustworthy than someone who had never done what you did. So, yeah, I do think it is fair.

What's fair and what is The Law are mutually exclusive concepts. Our legal system is a convoluted mess of politics and technicalities that must be navigated like a chess game.
Unfortunately, unless they are sealed or expunged, criminal records are public information and eligible to be accessed on the Internet.
Talk to your lawyer and see if there is a process or appeal you can initiate to have your record erased or made confidential. Take care and best of luck!

You did the crime. Now you have to take responsibility. Besides they have to protect the law-abiding citizens against you.Yes it is fair. There are jobs you can not hold if you have been in jail.

It depends on what you've done. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but businesses can check anyway (background check) and residents request certain info be easily accessible (mainly sex offenders and violent criminals).
Now that you've served your time, send a message on how to get it sealed and/or expunged.
