Has anyone noticed the weird weather over the years? When Florida had a severe drought- all the sudden Africa had massive flooding. What about the lack of snow in VA? and the massive snow storms flooding the West all the sudden? Also what about all these record highs and lows we see all across the globe? It seems to me like the earth is off balance and getting worse. Maybe it is because of the "Global Warming" or maybe it is because of something else? Is it just me that notices this? There is a lot more to put here but of course I don't have the time to list all the weird weather..

I don't think it's el or la nino that's the cause of this crazy weather. It just seems that it's gradually getting worse each time the "cycle" goes through? what do you think?

because people are in denial this isn't El nino which they claimed it was last year and the year before, this isn't part of a natural cycle last year was the hottest ever recorded not the hottest since last El nino freaks are going to get us all killed as they are to afraid to see there is a problem. The scientist say its not right and you listen to the politicians. they are leeches they feed off us, the politicians will destroy the planet if we let them. Maybe you guys don't care about your children i hope to leave them with somewhere to live.

Is not only you sweety, have u not read the papers or hear the news? NY/NJ had 70 degree weather last week!!! IDK but im afraid in 50 years from now we are gonna burn alive!

It doesn't matter. The critical issue is not what the temperature is, or may be, or will be. The critical issue is how fast it is moving. Rapid climate change is the prime suspect in most mass extinction events, including the Great Dying some 250 million years ago, in which 90% of all life went extinct.

What we know about ecosystems, and what geologic history demonstrates, is that dramatic climate changes -- up or down or sideways -- are a tremendous shock to the biosphere and cause mass extinction events. That, all in all, is not likely to be a good thing.

This is an interesting question and there was a gentleman a few hours ago who asked a very similar question. This was my answer for him and also for you.

I believe there is an answer to this perplexing observation of yours and others who have responded to your question. We know that something we now call chaos or chaos theory may be the cause. You may remember James Gleick's book "Chaos - Making a New Science" published in 1987. This author, in the first chapter of his book entitled The Butterfly Effect gives Dr. Ed Lorenz of MIT the credit for having "discovered" this world of nonlinearity. This explains, for example, why even the best numerical prediction models on the planet begin to fail miserably at around 14 days. There is chaos in the atmosphere which helps create weather events with a randomness that in time becomes visible to all who take note of the weather. I hope this helps a little.

Global Warming

Drought and flood cycles are normal, do you have any evidence that recent ones are outside of normal? The same can be said for snow falls, warm versus cold winters etc. What record highs and lows are you talking about?

Good question. Look at is from this perspective: you can analyze satellite images over a long term period now thanks to modern technology. Look at the satellite imagery from Atlanta, Georgia over a ten year period and you will see the expansion of housing developments and the loss of tree cover and small ecosystems. Losing trees can drastically change wind patterns, allow more sunlight to penetrate into housing areas, as well as areas with strip malls and large parking areas. These areas collect large amounts of solar heat and release them into the atmosphere drastically changing atmospheric conditions and wind direction. Now multiply this one area by thousands as this is occurring all over the world. In South America huge portions of the tropics are slashed and burned for crops and cattle grazing. These areas around the equator are slowly becoming desert regions and are expanding every year, affecting wind direction and heat content. More and more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere every year, thus trapping solar energy and heating the environment. Last year Atlanta, Georgia had a Code Red concerning the quality of air. A Code Red is air quality that is too harmful to breathe for humans. Is this the type of life we want to live on Earth? We need to change our fossil fuel addiction immediately if we are to survive as a species on planet Earth.
