the tool i use is great. it has a free trial period and will untill registered clean only about ten errors per scan, so if you do not want to pay for it you may have to run several scans until your system reports as clean.
see more about it direct at the publishers website
http://www.registry-clean.net
i've never had a problem using it.
i tried other registry cleaner such as those listed by other answerer but i found a couple of them caused more problems than they solved.
i see one person listed spybot, that is not a registry cleaning tool.
one other free program you can try as adaware from lavasoft, though not strictly a registry cleaning tool, it will help eliminate some spyware that can get in your registry and will help remove the MRU lists that are part of your system as standard if you run Microsoft windows operating systems.
you should also get a professional quality malware defence package such as the one provided by trend micro (http://www.trend-micro.com) look for pc-cillin the best suite you can have on the market today, and trust me i have tried many of the freeware and paid for malware defense packages such as mcaffee, norton, avg and a few others over the years, none come close to the trend micro suite for performance and system stability.
for example with lesser packages (security suites) I have had an infection or two under similier operating conditiions to the one I run as standard now. I have a family mail server, which is up 24/7 and running as it does i have not as yet had any problems, not even spam mail on my server as yet but then that is because i have my systems security cnfigured. if only professional companies would configure security correctly. such as blocking remote server to remote server mail messages, as well as blocking or not setting up a catch all mail address.
sorry to ramble on. but registry cleaning is just the tip of keeping your system operating at peak performance.
speaking from personal experianmce of customizing and maintaining my own computer systems for the last few years.
so good luck. and remeber nothing in this life is truly free, some freeware programs come with backdoors into your computer for spammers and scamers/ hackers to gain access to your personal data and could even alllow them to delete your data files, music pictures and videos. so use freewware programs at your own risk.

Hello,
You can find a free download of ccleaner here http://j.mp/UrAHYV
CCleaner is basically a dedicated cleaner which cleans the unwanted files in your computer... eg. when you download or open any file or site, at many places it is registered in your computer that is not needed by the computer to work.....its a wonderful software that frees unwanted space...
Norton is basically a dedicated anti-virus..... I suggest to still install CCleaner
