Their stock control, website personalization, quality of user experience and customer relationships are the primary synergies. Much of the infrastructure is common regardless of the product type but there isn't necessarily synergy with non physical products or things with a non shopping cart sales process and that may be where opportunities can be found.

Amazon is like "walmart" with class. All products make Amazon a 'one-stop' shop. Unlike a brick and mortar store, Amazon only has to reference all levels of purchases from the discounted ones (via half.com) to exclusive stuff.

The synergy is that selling books will only result in a much more narrow 'market'. I'm sure that behind the scenes, Amazon is doing significant data mining to get a persons complete 'purchasing profile'.

The synergy is in the mode of selling..i.e. they use the same selling tool(s) (i.e. the intereet) to sell clothing, music, etc as they initially did with books.....
