Wow ... I'm really appalled at some of the comments made about "Black republicans" here. As a black republican, I can safely say that I'm not a race traitor ... I just don't believe in being taken granted for by any party. At least with the GOP, I know where a knife is coming from. With the Democratic party, it's hard to tell where the knife is when your always being hugged and then stabbed from behind.

On the question about Colin Powell. I think he had has chance eight years ago. Unfortunately, that time has passed and there is no way that the party would nominate him for president.

I could see a scenario where he is nominated for Vice President ... but that would require his family to change their minds and be willing to step back into the full limelight.

He onces was, but being a moderate republican made him out of fashion for this administration and thankfully for him forced his leaving it. Republicans cannot win the white house in 2008, but they could make it a hard fight for the Democrats.

The greatest failure of this Presidency will be Iraq. Now, I do not exonerate Powell of delivering a speech to the UN he did not believe in, while he did serve, as do all cabinet member, at the please of the President; he is skillful enough to have resigned without damaging the party.

Having said that let us not forget Desert Storm. We didn’t exactly use the "Powell Doctrine: in this ramp up to Afghanistan or Iraq did we. For those of you not familiar with it:

The questions posed by the Powell Doctrine, which should be answered affirmatively before military action, are:

Is a vital national security interest threatened?
Do we have a clear attainable objective?
Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?
Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?
Is the action supported by the American people?
Do we have genuine broad international support?

Future republican success won't be with McCain. The Maverick who once pulled the miracle in Iowa is slipping with his "base"--independents.

Now beyond 2008, and not speaking specifically of the Presidency the future o the party is with republicans like Lt. Governor of the State of Maryland, Michael S. Steele.

And to the young lady who detest black republicans over all other, you might want to take a look at the work Steele has done for Marylanders in general and minority business in particular and he made the things happen (not talked about initiatives) as a LT Governor.

By the way I am not a republican, or from Maryland

Nope, Colin Powell is tainted not only by his association with George W. Bush - including his disgraceful lying performance at the United Nations in February 2003 - but also by his involvement in Iran Contra. Colin Powell was the general who implemented the transfer of the TOW missiles to Iran in January 1986.

Jeb Bush has no chance either - nor does anybody who has a background with the neoconservative think tank Project for the New American Century which instigated the war in Iraq.

Jeb Bush is a loser, most in Americans know that. I would vote for Powell. He is the only Republican that is not a Bush butt kisser. He told Bush that Bush should have a exit policy before the invasion of Iraq. Bush ignored Powell. Then fired him. Powel knows war, unlike Bush and Cheney who are both draft dodgers. A Clinton and Edwards ticket will give Democrats 8 years in the White House. I really hope and pray Republicans run Jeb Bush.

The worst possible scenario for the GOP would be a (pick one)McCain/Powell/Giuliani candidacy.

None of them are conservatives. Democrats have to run to the center if they expect to win, as the majority of Americans are slightly right of center. Republicans do best when we nominate a candidate who is strong in his core conservative philosophy. We need to find another Ronald Reagan. The trick is to find that person. I love Sen. Brownback from Kansas, but I don't know if he's electable.

Please, no Jeb Bush. I'm not sure but I think it's in the constitution that you can't be president if your name is Jeb. If it isn't, it needs to be there.

I'm all for Colin Powell, the only reason why he made a weak secretary of state is because the Bush Admin had him mostly silenced.

How about McCain / Powell? Now that's a dream team.

He could be; he has integrity, strength, and intelligence, and he's better than most of what the party has out there at any level these days. I don't know much about Jeb, but if he's anything like Dubya, no thanks. I'd vote for Powell though.

Shocking!

"jerseygal" stated for the record: "the only thing i hate more then a Republican is a black Republican"

Who is surprised to find a liberal who thinks Black Republicans are race traitors? Good thing liberals all like an "open mind"... except when an open mind leads them to the Republican Party.
