I have hazel eyes and my partner has light blue eyes. Can we produce a dark brown eyed newborn?

Actually, the genetics behind eye color is not exactly simple. There are anywhere between 4 and 6 genes that code for eye color.

We're taught in school that it's a simple Mendelian trait, with blue eyes being recessive .... lol ... they lie to us. Generally, blue IS recessive to brown, but not for the reasons you think.

The only pigment that produces eye color is melanin (which is brown). There are several muscle layers in the iris of the eye. In all but pink-eyed albinos, the bottom layer of the iris is pigmented. This produces very light blue eyes, due to diffraction (the same reason the sky is blue).

The more layers of the iris that are pigmented, the darker the eye color appears. People with dark brown eyes have all layers of the iris pigmented. Green/hazel eyes result from more complex patterning (in between blue and brown).

Given your genetics, I'd say that your baby will likely have hazel eyes; however, ANY eye color is possible.

Yes, it's possible. Actually, a recent research discovered that there are less and less blue eyed babies born around the world, even to blue-eyed parents. It has to do something with gene mutation, I can't remember exact details. But it is definetly possible! Not to mention, hazel is basically light brown.

Also, your newborn's eyes will most likely change their color within the first year, so who knows, the baby may still end up being hazel-eyed.

How light are these hazel eyes? i think its possible that your baby could have brown eyes....because Hazel is sometimes Brown...just a lightter version ...(I may be wrong here) Blue is recessive, so if hubby has no other Blue gene lurking in his genetic make-up, the baby would have brown (hazel) eyes. But remember, all caucasian babies have blue eyes at birth...they change over time, it could be as much as a year.

Punnet square please! Blue eyes are bb (must have 2 recessive genes to get the trait) Hazel can be HH or Hb, HH no chance for anything but Hazel ( a derivation of brown), Hbxbb:50% blue, 50% hazel (brown). No reason you can't have brown.

I was watching a show called (Baby in the Womb) on Geograhic or Discovery Channel, dont; remember which one. Anyway, everything in the baby's body could be genes from either of the parents but when it comes to eye colors, the baby has its own. doesn't matter if the parents have blue or green eyes the baby will have its own color.

Sure. Either or both parents could carry the gene for brown eyes. It's just a roll of the dice which gene your baby chooses.

Yes. I have blue eyes and my husband's are green. Our son has beautiful dark chocolate eyes. The genetics go farther back than just the parents.
