You have to bear in mind that George W. Bush is a Republican - and from a wealthy family at that - so he has absolutely no sense of fiscal responsibility.

Hence it shouldn't be surprising that he spent all of his "political capital" within a few weeks after that statement and proceeded to spend it again - over and over again - even though he didn't have any left.

(incidentally, there's a big difference between Bush's victories and Clinton's elections in popular vote terms - Bush actually lost the popular vote to Gore by 500,000 votes in 2000 and only beat Kerry by 3 million votes in 2004 while Clinton beat Bush Sr. by nearly 6 million popular votes in 1992 and Dole by over 8 million popular votes in 1996 while not carrying the popular majority in either case due to Ross Perot)

That just shows the arrogance of power. His real political capital was not a mandate from the people, but a rubberstamp legislature backing him up. Like a Fascist coup.

It was a close race and the percentage hides the sheer numbers that did vote for him. Sure, it might have been 51-49, but it was still a difference of 4 million people. That's a lot.

EDUCATING IDIOTS

He was twice elected President of the United States. Republicans have controlled the White House for 28 of the last 40 years and it will be 36 of the last 48 after Sen. John McCain, War Hero and Prisoner of War, is twice elected in 2008 and 2012.

Get in the game little man.

He did have a lot of momentum after he won the election. What is amazing to me is how quickly things changed. I think the war had a lot to do with that however.
