That is a rather broad question, difficult to adequately answer.
We take ours in Sept, after labor day. The weather is still very good in most places, the roads are clear, the traffic is a lot less because kids are back in school, and the snowbirds aren't on the road yet.
We are an older couple whose children are grown, though, and we travel in an RV.
However, even when my kids were school-age, if I was going to a place that tended to be touristy (national parks, disneyland, etc), we would still go the first week of sept and they missed the first few days of school. Wasn't a regular thing, and was worth it, we all thought.
I would recommend researching the areas you want to vacation at for the seasonal weather, attractions, tourist info, and make your decision from the details you find out about the place you want to travel to.
Like, if you want a ski vacation, sept in north america would NOT be the time to go!

Perhaps this may not apply in the States, but I awas fly to the US (from the UK) on Good Friday. As it is a religious holiday flights (on Virgin Atlantic at least) are signicantly cheaper. For a family of 5, £1000 ($2000!) cheaper!
