I am going to stick with how I answered this question the last time someone asked. I say Santa Barbara with Stearns Wharf and the ferry rides but when the question went to a vote Monterey, CA won with Carmel, Ca coming in real close too. Your best bet is to plan on visiting many of the great coastal cities. There are so many. Highway 1 will take you through many. Lots to see and do.

It depends but in general you might wanna go to Orange County for the beach. Places like huntington, newport, laguna beach are near the beach area. Irvine and Costa Mesa for shopping mall. Plus Disneyland is in this county too.

Then if you are considering for Los Angeles it's good for night life because they have clubs, bars, and restaurant. They have great shopping place too like melrose, santa monica, etc. However, it's not near the beach and the traffic is so ridiculous.

I think Napa Valley is one of the most beautiful cities in California.
San Diego is pretty cool too, with its nice beaches, great casual cities and they have a lot of attractions from Sea World to malls.

My suggestion would be to fly into San Francisco or Oakland, rent a car, and just drive south on Highway 101. You will see many beautiful towns, beaches and parks. Go as far south as San Diego. Don't miss an inch of it. You can take your time and stop to see anything that interests you.

Enjoy your time in the States.

Probably Santa Barbera. Laguna Beach is nice, but it's a little too close to ... other cities not so nice.

Laguna Beach or Santa Barbara.

San Francisco is Physically gorgeous but the weather can really suck and there are no beachs really that are anything great.

I like Sacramento also. You can hit San Fran area and Lake Tahoe area from there. If you like cities then LA would be for you. LA is near beach.
