My garage has informed me that they need to change the engine on my BMW. Will the resale value of the car go down? he said he will put a refurbished engine. are they reliable? and what about mileage? Please advice. Thanks

Keep reciepts, specifically listing the miles on the odometer when the swap was done.
Refurbished engines are normally just as reliable if not more then from the factory, so long as they are done by a reputible company.

No this will not have a negative affect on resale. It may even have a positive affect as the motor will have less miles :-)

On some collector cars if the motor is swapped, then the numbers don't match and that affects price, but on a 318i go ahead and swap away.

A BMW engine should not need refurbishing, if it does then it has been neglected and should be avoided. In most cases the garage are just using the refurb term very lightly indeed, probably just means it has been steam cleaned. How old is the car? You havnt given much info

Replacing an engine will not knock the value provided that it is fitted professionally and properly

You are simply repairing a car to original standards because something has worn out

The engine or transmission in that respect is no different to the brakes or starter motor. You would replace other components as they wore out so why not the engine
