Sounds like you have some Bad clusters on your HDD. Try to fix it using Scandisk program or defrag it.

Do it quickly you may loose data from the bad clusters.

The scan disk option in Registry is on.
Or if someone else used it, then they may have done a command line change. Check with the other person first, since switching off the scan disk in registry, involves stopping autochk which can be sometimes handy

To stop a scheduled task that is running open Scheduled Tasks.
Right-click the task that you want to stop, and then click End Task.

To open Scheduled Tasks, click Start, click All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
If a scheduled task is started and then stopped, End Task does not stop all other programs that the scheduled task might have started.
If you stop a scheduled task that is currently running, you might experience a delay (up to three minutes) before the task shuts down.
To restart a stopped task, right-click the task, and then click Run.

Sounds like your hard drive could be getting ready to crash. I would start backing things up.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
