I'll venture a guess. Maybe the expression came into usage as a result of Charles Dickens stories. Tiny Tim in a "Christmas Carol" was awfully lovable.

I have no idea, but here's something that SOUNDS good - It might refer to Dickens' "David Copperfield" - the kids were orphans and cute. . . well, like I said, it COULD be right... hahaha
