I about 5 people on 5 computers running wireless to a router. I want to have all of those people to take their computers and access this external hardrive to back up their files when they want. How can I do this???

You can get a NAS (network attached storage) adapter for your external hard-drive from Linksys or Netgear. Then everybody can have access to the drive and you have full control of the drive. You can even access the drive using internet (remote area).

A network server is a computer - it may be a very simple computer that can only do sharing its disk to users, but it's a computer. So you want to connect your external disk to the network, you've got to get a computer to connect the disk to the network.

Go look on ebay - you can buy network attached storage devices that you put your disk drive in and it's able to do what you want. The thing you buy is a dedicated computer that you fit your hard disk to...

Otherwise you can 'make' your own out of an old PC.

try unplugging the desktop hard drive and then booting using the laptop hdd. its because you can only have 1 active partition at once, and if there are 2 drives both with operating systems it wont work

Yep, just connect it to your PC and share the drive thru my computer and disable your firewall
