Is there any point to focusing on things labelled as "diaper bags" when shopping for something to be used as ditto? They seem a bit overpriced for such basic-looking tote bags, and I'm inclined to think you can just jam a portable changing pad in the right sort of regular backpack. True?

You are correct. You can use any bag that you would like to use, it's your choice. Most diaper bags though also have 1-2 places to store bottles which is really nice.

VERY TRUE!

I use a big canvase bad I bought at K-mart for $2. It isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but what a diaper bag needs to be is washable and big enough to hold bottle and formula (or breat milk) a change of clothes for baby, a new shirt for you (cause the kid will gaurenteed puke on you out in public the day you don't have a spare shirt on hand) a toy or two. A few diapers and a littel pack of wipes.

I hate the "diaper bags" that I usually see in the store. What grown woman wants to carry winnie the pooh or dora around all day?

If you have a backpack you like go for it.

I am on my third baby. With the first i got the basic "diaper bag'" labeled as such and way to huge. The later at Target i foung a nice little diaper bag that was green and black and not so babyish looking. I used that and kept using it when my second was born but now i'm tired of it and with my third i bought a sling backpack from LLbean it has a mesh bottle holder on the outside and it allows me to carry my bag without thinking about it. It also doesn't swing on my arm and bonk the other kids in the head. It works fine and isn't considered a diaper bag but i use it as such. I also notice that other people like my husband doesn't mind carrying it.

Yes, any tote or backpack will do. Diaper bags are fun, though, kind of a rite-of-passage of parenting. Sometimes they can seem like they cost more than a regular tote bag, but it's good to have the extra pockets and the changing pad, and sometimes they have cold-pack/hot-pack sections which is nice for bottles. Target and Walmart have really stylish ones for cheap these days.

i found that diaper bags dont even last that long and you go through so many in just a year. They are also really overpriced, you can get another bag or tote that works just as well for a cheaper price, who cares if it has winnie the pooh or some other character that your baby doesnt even know what it is yet.

completely true!
my sister-in-law uses a coach tote bag as her diaper bag...a little pricey for my budget, but that's what she wanted.

i have a simple tote that zips shut and is a nylon material, it's an actual diaper bag, but it's khaki and blue ginham trim and could be used as a beach bag or something else easily.

i've had friends that just used a small backpack.

really, as long as it'll hold some diapers, wipes, changing pad, ziploc baggie for change of clothes (baby may have a blow out) or a ziploc baggie for dirty diapers, in case a trash can isn't readily available....and some room for bottles and formula and bottled water, then it can be a diaper bag!

really....all that stuff doesn't take up that much room. sounds like a lot, but it really isn't.

take care!

Definitely dry clean. When they say "do not wash" they're probably talking about washing with water. Tide to go, baby wipes, damp clothes, and anything else may shrink your tote bag, so the best way to go is to dry clean. Just to be on the safe side, drop an e-mail to the Roxy company or go back to the store you got it at and ask one of the workers there.

You can carry a big purse around with a couple of diapers, a small portable box of wipes, & a bottle of formula!! Also, maybe some extra powdered formula & a change of clothing, just in case!!! It just makes it easier to carry ONE bag around, instead of 2!! Oh yes, don't make the mistake that I did...... OVERPACK!!! It just adds weight to the bag & makes it harder on you!! However, you can pack another BAG w/extras & leave it in your car!!!! Once again........ use powdered formula!!

Of course, you can use just about ANY bag as a diaper bag!!

Pick a bag you like and use it. Diaper bags are so overrated. Usually they look awful or they are cute, but way too expensive. Just carry a few gallon size plastic bags in the bag for wet cloths, dirty clothing, etc.

That's really all it is. A tote with pockets for stuff. We liked ours because it had a lined, waterproof pocket for 'dirty' diapers or clothes and it had a pullout mat for quick changes in case you were somewhere that didn't have a clean changing table. You're right, though, it's just a bag with stuff in it.
