this is more of a psychology question than a math question.

An infant might show it in the shape-through-the-hold toy... they try the triangle, it doesn't fit, so they try the octagon, it doesn't fit, so they try the pentagon, it fits. Aha!

Or, they try the triangle in the circle, it doesn't fit, so they try the triangle in the square, it doesn't fit, so they try the triangle in the triangle, it fits. Aha!
