Our daughter is a year old, and we've just transitioned her to a sippy cup (and are training her to hold it). I've read that if a baby holds his/her own bottle (and really if they carry it around or take it to bed with them... another issue on its own), they can become more attached to it (which could make it difficult to transition to a cup).

Babycenter.com has a lot of information about milestones. Also, if you have a Publix near you, sign up for their baby club... great information in a book and newsletters.

My baby could hold his own bottle and drink from it in a reclining position at about 7 months. That is pretty average. Your baby is way too young. And while I put his hands on the bottle and he supported it's weight, at that age he didnt' have the control to take the bottle out, put it back in, reposition his hands if he lost his grip, etc. Now he is getting to that point at 8 months with his sippy cup. But he gets so distracted playing with the cup that I usually end up holding it myself anyways! :)

Both my kids started holding their own bottles around 5 months.

I can't remember the milestones but if you go to babycenter.com they have all of that info and you can sign up for them to email you every month with milestones and tips.

My daughter held her bottle when she was 4 months. . she's crawling and cruising at 6 months, though - that's considered a 'fast' development. I think it has a lot to do with having a 2-year-old sister she's trying to keep up with : )

My daughter started holding her bottle at nine months...someone told me that was too late, I guess it all depends on the baby.
