Most petshops will not ever buy fish from an individual. They only buy from farms and breeders that they deal with all the time. Afterall, they can provide a warranty on them, you can't. Secondly, if you find one that will take it, RUN away from them as they are not a very good place. Last, don't sell it to a petstore anyways. Advertise it in the paper. Someone will take it. I would say about $15-$20 obo would do good.

If you don't know what it is bring a picture and a measurement to the shop with you.DON'T bring the fish expecting them to take it (unless its free) Many shops have fish in there tanks already and fitting a Cichlid (that may be aggressive) may not be possible at this time. A large Cichlid may not be worth much to a shop unless they carry alot of large fish as there are fewer people with big tanks that can accommodate it (Why are you getting rid of it?) Don't be surprised if the amount offered is very little as taking a big fish can be a big risk for a shop (remember they have to sell it at a higher price to get their money back ) try and find a shop that specializes or carries a big selection of cichlids to get the best offer.

Around here any fish store will take a fish, but they won't buy it, they'll only give you store credit for it. It's nice to think fish shops would be nothing but quality and won't take fish if 'they don't know where it's from', but in the real world the shops take anything if they can make a profit, and frankly the larger portion of shops don't exactly shop for quality even from their suppliers - we live in a world about price, not quality (unfortunately).

Now, how much your cichlid is worth is impossible to say, because cichlids come in a thousand different varieties. Don't expect too much if it's something common like an Oscar. Your 'cichlid' can be worth anywhere from 5$ to 200$.

Here's a question, would you buy a fish from someone who didn't know what it was? What would be the odds that it would be a quality fish. What about its health? A reputable shop wouldn't buy your fish unless they had seen your aquaria, and were familiar with your fish keeping practices. Really good fish dealers visit the fish farms and importers that they do business with. If they haven't they are just guessing about the things they sell to you.-------PeeTee
