Orlando - Family vacations (Disney and Universal, etc.)
Las Vegas - Nightlife and casinos
Washington DC - Museums and nightlife
Grand Canyon
Yellowstone Park
Beautiful beaches up and down both coasts (not to mention Hawaii) - I am particularly fond of Ocean City , MD and Pemsiquit Point, Maine
New Orleans (it is recovering) - Nightlife, Mardi Gras
Boston - Museums, the pops, US history
Philadelphia - Museums and US history good nightlife
I have been backpacking in the Rockies, the Adirondacks and on the Appalachian Trail. I have visited many historic sites and seen museums, zoos and the nightlife in many cities up and down the East coast of the US.

there are many, many, many places worth visiting, actually, especially if you add scenic beauty to your list (That list would be quite extensive - multiple listings for each state).
for nightlife, add Boston, Georgetown (in Washington, DC), Seattle, Florida beach towns, and Vegas (among others). For museums, add Seattle, Boston, and Washington DC.
Traditionally, New Orleans would rank pretty highly on your list of three qualifications as well, but I'm not sure how things are there these days.
Outside of the cities, the number of small towns and natural areas would take pages and pages to list. Here in the Northeast alone, there are hundreds, probably thousands, of places worth going to.

Stuff the typical European judgements - The USA is famous for it's immense range of environmental ecosystems, from Florida's everglades to Alaska's glaciers...how about the National Parks, the Rocky Mountains, The miles and miles of Beaches, The desert?
It depends on what you're looking for - if you want to stay in the cities and see fashion and drink in nightclubs, then only visit NY, Chicago, and San Fran...but if you want to venture out of your normal habits (isn't that the point of traveling??), then America has a million other things to offer.

Yeah we understand, we say that in Europe, only London Paris and Amsterdam are worth the visit.... Now think how ridiculous that statement is and apply that to what you asked. There are many many great places in the USA. Stop acting like euro trash

Texas! San Antoino is a favorite visiting place for all of my European friends. San Antonio has it's on unique culture. It is very Hispanic and pretty. I think they like the Alamo because that is where John Wayne was in one of his movies.
