i would talk to her for a little bit. it would be ok to be late at the party.... i would tell her to calm down, give her some tips, and ask her to go to the party with me so that she can forget about her unhappy experience and have a little fun to cheer her up...

Listen...Most people understand if you already have important plans that you are not going to cancel them just to talk. ( unless it is a REAL emergency) You sound like a very CONSIDERATE person , so I hope all these friends are as considerate of your feelings too.
There is nothing wrong with saying, Hey, I have to go now, but I'll call you as soon as I get home.
