This may not be as prominent of a figure as you were loking for but my favorite is Johnathan Holt Foster my GR. GR. GR. GR. grandfather served in the 136th ind. infantry in the us civil war wounded three times and fought in 27 different battles.I am very proud of his service and all other american veterans who dont stand in the spotlight but help make all the famous leaders who they are

Charles Martel and King Leonidas...the former is responsible for keeping the Muslims from total domination of Europe (Battle of Tours), the latter is partially responsible for keeping the Persians from domination of the Greeks (Battle of Thermopylae, which the new movie "300" is based on, though it looks to be science fiction).
