You may be interested in this quote from a UK academic: At the recent 'Hearing the Student Voice' conference at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, I learned that Wikipedia originally takes its name from the Hawaiian word 'Wiki' which means 'quickly'. Many academics frown upon Wikipedia in bibliographies, some even ban the use of it - but are we right to? The argument against Wikipedia centres around the fact that any registered user can edit an entry - therefore there may be a quality issue. However, according to a study in the journal 'Nature' there was no significant difference in quality between articles in Wikipedia, and articles in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. I have recently been conducting research into music and politics, as part of this I wanted to trace the history of the charity single. I found some information in printed form, but a search in Wikipedia revealed a greater wealth of information, including facts that were so current that text books could never compete. Wikipedia also revealed links to other useful articles, so in a short space of time I had quickly gathered much information. I can see why our often time poor students like using Wikipedia, it really does quicken the searching process, maybe in future we should be more tolerant of it. AJ

The more people are aware of the Wikipedia, the more vandalism will occur. Sad, but true.

Now there are hundreds of articles locked. Only three years ago all articles were open, with a couple of exceptions.

In a few years, all articles will need to be locked, and the Wikipedia will stop being what it is: a live encyclopaedia.

Uh, of course people are 'messing up' Wikipedia. Everything on wikipedia is submitted by users. So it's not 100% reliable, but it's generally a fine source. So if somethings messed up, report it. They can probably restore the page.
