Depends on what the medication is - Some are very dangerous, some are fine, I would call a dermatologists and find which ones are safe - they'd know better than a family doctor or OBGYN.

My family doctor said to stop using all of them to be on the safe side. I'll be going to see my dermatologist again in a few weeks to ask him, last time I talked with my dermatologists about the possibility of getting pregnant, he said he usually recommends that a woman doesn't use anything the first trimester, and then he'll use some mild topical treatments for the rest - but I'm not sure which ones.

So you want a second professional opinion, and you ask a bunch of bored people on yahoo answers?
I still believe that asking both another dermatologist and another ob/gyn would be the best way to go, especially because they will know the particular medication, how long you've been taking it, etc.
To my knowledge, anything with vitamin A is risky to use during pregnancy, but I am sure a doctor will be able to be much more specific.

Ask for a second opinion I do not think your Doctor has thought the answer through. It would depend on what ingredients comprise the medication. Some might be safe while others could harm.

If I were pregnant, for the child sake and emotional well-being later in live I would personally err on the side of caution.

Doctors are just people who make guesses at what is best for us. Its up to us to educate ourselves. That you asked this question seems to indicate you have doubts about this advice from your doctor-That's good follow through.

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.

For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.

Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

Do not use salycylic acid products. That's the same as aspirin which you are NOT supposed to take when you're pregnant. Benzyl Peroxide should be fine. Otherwise, live with the acne because it usually clears up after giving birth anyway. Be sure to wash your hands a lot.

Differin's a 'retinoid.'

"The retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that are related chemically to vitamin A."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinoid

I wouldn't use it, and I'm not prone to being skittish about things.

"Topical versions of tretinoin (Retin-A and Renova) and another retinoid called adapalene (Differen) also are available to treat acne and sun-damaged skin. Studies to date suggest that topical retinoids do not appear to cause birth defects. However, some questions about their safety in pregnancy remain, due to a few reports of birth defects in babies of women who used these preparations during pregnancy. Until more is known about the safety of topical retinoids during pregnancy, it’s best for women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy to use the safer medications discussed above."

Ask another doctor then. Or ask a dermatologist. We aren't experts here nor should you base the health and welfare of your child on what someone tells you on this open forum.
