For money reasons - isn't it always. Proctor & Gamble wanted the product to colored, sized, designed, packaged, advertised, and marketed all the same in every market they sold in to save money.
I think it was in about 1999.
Unfortuneately P&G forgot to effectively tell their Customers -since when did Customers matter to big businesses.

In beauty products, "oil" is now considered a "no-no" by consumers. Having the word "oil" in the product name was detering consumers from purchasing the products as many assumed that oil was an ingredient in the line.
Olay also increased the line of products at that time and continues to do so to compete with other brands. Just like Dove has created shampoo, lotions, etc.

probably it was already called olay in a country that sells more than is sold here so in order to keep costs down and make advertising and such cheaper they decided to make the name olay international .

The company was known by both names as it was an international company. They changed it to Olay about 3yrs ago, there was advertising to notify change but it was pretty restricted due to cash flow.

Well if you put a G in Ulay you get a fairly accurate description of the women who use this awful product.

most likely it's a marketing technique. If you think about it, most people don't want to associate skin care with a product with the word "oil" in the title...it has a bad conotation.
