Jellyfish are not kept in aquaria because they are big, they school, and they require a large amount of water to live in.

Octopus are very difficult to keep in captivity, but not impossible. It is expensive and time consuming, and keeping in mind that an octopus may only live for 1-2 years, it can be a lot of effort for little return. You must of course make sure you that you have an octo small enough for your tank. They need perfect and stable water conditions, they need frequent feedings, and they need to be entertained :) Octos are really quite smart, and they bored easily, so they need structures to explore and that sort of thing.

So, as I say, not very common and not very easy, but not impossible for someone willing to invest time and money.

I imagine a jellyfish would be easy enough to maintain. All invertebrates are very sensitive to changes in the water conditions so they are probably not for the beginner. I have read that the octopus is an excellent escape artist. People come home and find the octopus dead on the floor. They are very intelligent animals and some are also highly poisonous, so definitely a pet for the expert.

We had an octopus for a while, and while he was very cool to watch, I wouldnt recommend them. Its alot of work, they need perfect conditions, a very escape free cage, activity to keep them occupied, and most species require a chiller. And after all that they die anyway, because there life span is so short. By the time you see them in a pet store, they are already full grown, and you'll get maybe 6-8 months out of them.

All the other answers are good, but there is one more thing about octopi, the really cute ones are poisonous, like in deadly, like kill human sized animals poisonous. And almost impossible to keep in a tank if they want out.----PeeTee
