Im making a web site and I was wondering how to Submit it to the search engines so that when people search my site will appear for them to view.

Go to each popular search engine and submit your main url.

Ahh! If only t'were that easy!
You can go to Google and to Yahoo and submit the 'existence' of your site to them. Your other SE to submit to is WindowsLive (was MSN) I guess.
These days it seems a good idea to use both Google and Yahoo site maps submission as this keeps them in touch with developments too. Younneed to go to their respective assistance pages and 'try' and follow the instructions! ;-)
Once submitted to the big boys - you sit back and hope they send out their little emissaries (the so called 'spiders' - to check your site out). If it merits it it mayb be listed - and eventually you will be able to saerch for your site domain and find the pages it they have listed. This can take from days to months depeding on the quality of your site.
Generally it is probably not worth submitting until you have a few pages up (say 20 to 30) - BUT you can ceratinly get listed and found with less - I have several sites with under 12 pages that got listed within a month.
You should also do the rounds of the 'direectories' and expecially the FREE to submit, niche directories that suit your site.
Just hack away submitting as many directories as you can. Yahoo and Google also pick you up from these even if you don't submit straight to them, eventually!
THE BIG QUESTION IS...
Will your site be featured in the SE results anywhere near enough to the front of the queue to be actually found by anyone! (hence get free, organic traffic)... You really need to be in the first 3 pages (and ideally on page 1) of results to get good traffic. If your site contains good solid information (content) and is not spammy, and has well constructed meta tags...you should start to see your site being picked up eventually.
The fastest I made it onto page1 was 3 days for a tight niche topic - but equally I have pages I have written that are still languishing without attention some month or two after publishing them (ususally because in a competitive key word area) ...
So don't expect sudden impact from SE submissions.

You are talking about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which is a process of making your website search engine friendly. This is a process that improves web pages so that they rank higher in the main search engines results pages for targeted keywords and increasing rankings / traffic.
A really good resource is the Beginners Guide to Search Engine Optimisation http://www.seomoz.org/beginners.php which will help you understand more and give you things to implement on your site straight away - which should give you positive results. You can download it as a word document or view it there.

Go to the main google page.
Click on "About Google".
Click on "Submit your content to Google"
Click on "Add your URL to Google's Index"
and follow the instructions.
It may be a few days before the site is indexed. You can test it by searching in Google for a phrase which occurs on your site. If Google returns your page anywhere in its list, then you're in!

I agree with all the answers but the best way is to let th search engine to fiend ur sit because if u add ur site dirctly to se they will put it in sandbox to moneter ur site for 2 months or more
u can add ur site to some directory like www.dmoz.org
and in this way it will be index faster

Join the sitemaps.xml revolution. (Google, MSN and Yahoo follow the standard)
Then join up to as many directories as possible.
Then start a link campaign.
