i have windows XP, and when i turn on my computer....it shows the dell sign...and then a black screen comes up, and either tells me to insert some boot diskette in Drive A:....or says that the disk read error and to press control alt delete to restart....but then it just goes back to that same screen...so how could i at least get it started in safe mode or something?

Hard drive failure. Your system is failing to boot from the hard drive. You cannot boot into safe mode with the error you are experiencing.

Insert your windows XP disk and see if it will boot from there. If you have a recovery disk from dell try putting that in the CD drive and restarting your system.

Your recovery disk or Windows disk will report any problems with your hard drive when they try to access it.

Try holding down the ESC or F8 key while it is booting. Your manual should tell you the key to hold down.

I think you need to get into your CMOS and change your boot order. You are set up to boot from the A drive and it should be the C drive.
