Do the Idol judges see every contestant in those screaming arena's, or are there preliminary auditions, not in front of the main judges, that filter out contestants beforehand?

Would like to hear from someone who actually has gone through the process.

I work with the mother of a contestant from last year (who made it into the semi-finals), and there is a prescreen (or 2) in front of the producers to weed out those who aren't really good or really awful and contestants with record contracts or representation. From there they go in front of the judges.

A girl i went to high school with a girl that tried out this year. From what i understand, you see perliminary judge 1st and they decide wheather you go on the Randy and Simon and Paula. AS you can see by the audition some is for ENTERTAINMENT not Talent.
