My hand bag was stolen. The person who stole it was caught and given a police caution. I am wondering if I can claim anything fron this person for the contents of my bag which was never found.

Only if you think that a thief is going to respond to any attempt to sue them for the cost of the items stolen.

You will need the name and address of the thief in order to write to them asking that they compensate you for your losses within 14 days or you will sue them in the Small Claims Court without further notice. Information re: the Small Claims process and making an application on line can be found at: http://www.courtservice.gov.uk

Realistically, I suspect that you will be wasting your time given that the person who stole your bag is unlikely to be law abiding.

Good luck.

Its possible to enter into a civil suit against the person but in reality it would cost more than was probably in the handbag. I would also guess that this person doesn't have any money and thus steals for a living.
I guess you would chaulk your loss up to experience but I certainly would "thank" the police for being such a help to you.

You can bring a civil action against him, but if he has no assets then it might be difficult enforcing any judgment and you might find yourself at the end of the day out of pocket. Make sure you know what sort of a person you are dealing with before you embark on any action.

Sure you can. Sue him through the small claims court.
