Now I'm confused. A "blockbuster" movie is one that's really successful, but the original meaning of "blockbuster" was "a huge bomb". Does anyone else see the contradiction here?

I believe the term was first used to describe popular films (circa 1930s) where people lined up around the block and more (i.e. the crowd busted out of the city block).

So a blockbuster is a work or an event that is very popular.
