knittinghelp.com, I think, is the site with videos (and I cannot BEGIN to say how much more valuable than a book a video is for knitting).
A nice site where you can easily pick up the basics--casting on, the knit stitch, and binding off-- is here: http://www.learntoknit.com/instructions_kn.php3 Feel free to ignore their boring block instructions and keep going to make up a scarf!

I learned by watching Knitty Gritty on DIY network. What I did was record the shows with my dvd recorder and I look at them periodically. I also bought a knitting starter kit our of Michaels. It comes with an instruction book two sets of needles and just about everything you will need as a beginner. It helped me out a lot and now I can follow knitting patterns like a pro. It takes practice, practice, practice but once you get it, it is sooooo much fun and sooo relaxing. If you need a knitting buddy, click my avatar and my email adress is displayed. take care and happy knitting.

The very very best website that has all the knitting tips is called knittinghelp.com. It has videos that teach you all the basic and even a few advanced knitting techinics. I used this site to teach myself how to knit a year ago and I loved it. Hope this helps you.

You can't beat a 'lesson' to get you started, speak to the ladies in your local wool shop, I bet they would love to help get you started!!
Once you have the basics, try http://www.knittinghelp.com/, I find this invaluable now that I can cast on, cast off, knit and purl. There are books, but I find a demonstration, even if its a video, is much more helpful.
