My doctor said follow the standard rules and I lived about an hour and 15 minutes away from the hospital I wanted to deliver at. So contractions 5 minutes apart or my water breaks. She said I could always call the hospital or her personal numbers (which she gave me and that's usually not standard so don't "expect" that) and ask questions to see what they say. Especially if it's your first baby, chances are your delivery will be MANY hours long. I bet you will be fine! Just make sure you always are ready to go (bag packed and NEVER return home without enough gas in the car to make the trip) and it will be fine! Good Luck!!
Just curious why so many women say you can't eat at the hospital.....? I was brought trays, snacks and TOLD I should eat something through all of my labor. Everyone I know who has delivered in the last 5 years has said the same thing.

It depends on if this is your first baby or not. I too delivered at a hospital that I lived an hour and a half away from. What I did was when my contractions were 10 minutes apart I headed that way so that I was already in the area when they got closer. If when you get there they still are not close enough to go to the hospital go to a park and walk or get something to eat(you can't eat once at the hospital)

this is a difficult question, do you mind having your labor in the car, if not i would say between 10 -15 min. apart. you should be heading to the hospital, but if you want the freedom to move around, walk, etc. perhaps sooner. With my first child, the contractions began at 9pm and my son was born at 2:23 am. Each labor is different and your little one could arrive faster or slower. Best to ask your doctor. and also do what feels right for you and makes you the most comfortable.
Great luck to you in this journey, and many Blessings for you and your new arrival

I thought the standard was when they were 5 minutes apart you should leave for the hospital...but then again most people don't live an hour and half away from the hospital

That's a hard one because everybody's labor and deliver process goes at different rates. Some people will have contractions that are 5 minutes apart for a very long time, others will progress rapidly and deliver speedily. Maybe your best bet is to go to that town once you are sure you are in labor and maybe get a hotel room. Call the maternity ward of the hospital and ask them too, the nurses who work in maternity wards are very knowledgeable and usually are happy to answer any of your questions. Good Luck to you, and Congratulations!!!!

You should leave to the hospital when your contractions are about 5-6 minutes apart.

I would say 10 minutes. I know that seems like a little bit of time with you living so far away but you want to make sure you don't drive the hour and a half for nothing. Also.. first time labors last longer than others. BUT.. make sure you share your concerns with your doctor. She can tell you for sure what she wants you to do. Good luck and congrats!!

I would say 7-10 minutes apart. You don't know how your body is going to handle the labor, and bouncing in the car can speed things up!
My best friend went into labor last night and her hospital is an hour away, she made it!
Good luck and congrads!

If I were you, to be on the safe side (and if it is possible), take a mini vacation lol. Seriously, pack up some stuff and go check into a hotel close to the hospital. Childbirth is very unpridictable, ecspecially if this is your first child. It could take hours or days to get through all the labor, or it could take minutes. Why gamble?

tough question.... what did your doctor say?
My rough guess would be go when the contractions are 3 mins apart. Things can move quickly after that.
