Thanks you to everyone who has answered so far - really helpful. There are many reasons why I dont like who I am - mostly because of the haphazard way I live my life, alcohol consumption and some bad things I have done.

You can change, become a better person, but it will mean changing behavior patterns. The way we act happens most of the time because we've done it that way so many times that the brain has programmed itself to do it that way, which it does if you don't consciously decide to take a different approach.
The way you change is to consciously decide to take a different approach, then keep doing that for a long time until the brain reprograms itself. Then it will feel easy and natural to behave the new way. This is a hard thing to do, because you can always fall back on the old pattern. You can expect mistakes, shortfalls along the way, but if you persist, ultimately you CAN create the new patterns. Don't try to change everything at once. Start with one big thing, such as alcohol. Take a year to turn that around, then work on something else. You can do it, millions of people have, but believe me, it won't be easy - you REALLY GOTTA WANT IT.

The first thing you should do is look at the people around you are they the ones that are making you feel so badly about yourself? Sometimes you measure yourself by the way other people treat you and if they treat you badly you think you are not worthy of better because you are not a good person. If that is your case they might have made you not like yourself so maybe you don't need to change yourself maybe you need to change the company you keep.

Work to help others, maybe Meals on Wheels or some other charity or good cause, like Amnesty International or Greenpeace. Learn and practice meditation and yoga nidra (no flexibility required). Go to: www.relax7.com and check out the blog of Shan Eris on "tackling depression" at www.myspace.com Read self help books, too.

I agree! Make a list of the things you like and things you would like to change. Sometimes the things we would like to change about ourselves can be used to our best advantages!
Try not to be so hard on yourself. Everyone has their unique points and everyone has somethings about themselves they don't like - so you're not alone.
Try getting the focus off yourself for a while and help someone else! This will give you a sense of happiness with yourself - and make someone else happier.
Good luck!

first step,, accept yourself the way you are,, than slowly make yourself a list of what can be changed for better, but again first step is be happy about who you are, every person has unique advantages which can be used for very good things

I would go to see a good therapist and discuss why you don't like who you are. They can help you to work through your self-loathing in a healthy and productive way.
