For a newborn don't use any scented dryer sheets.
At my NCT classes they suggested that even supposed 'baby safe' sheets are not recommended.
Wash the baby clothes seperate as well.
Remember, a newborn's skin is very immature and sensitive!

Doesn't anyone line dry anymore???
This is the best way to dry baby clothes. The sun helps to kill any germs (esp dust mites) and the wind helps to make the clothes soft. Unless you disinfect your dryer often, the warmth and moisture are perfect breeding ground for mould and other harmfull germs.
That said, it is a good idea to wash your newborns clothes separate at about 6 months you can start washing with other clothes, and whats the harm in washing your whole family's clothes in baby detergent? makes sure everything is soft and smells nice!
But no to the dryer sheets, I know they smell nice and all, but they can be very toxic to some people and if your baby IS allergic, you could be setting him/her up for some hypersensitivity later.
The older you get the less sensitive you should get to this stuff, so just wait awhile.
PS If you want a nice smell in your dryer, try putting a few drops of lavender oil on a cloth to replace the dryer sheets, this smells nice and also helps to disinfect the dryer as well.

As long as you use Dreft dryer sheets (or another brand that's listed as hypoallergenic/fragrance free) you should be fine.
A word of advice though--Dreft, Ivory Snow, etc. are all super expensive. We found after the birth of our second son that All Free and Clear works just as well (better, actually) than the "baby" detergents, didn't break our kids' skin out, and we were able to wash all the clothes together instead of doing a load of the kids' stuff then a load of ours.

I use All Free & Clear for my daughter's laundry, i also use downy, and Bounce dryer sheets. Her clothes smell so nice and other people comment on how "clean" she smells. I, myself, have a lot of allergies and I wash and dry all of my items with the above and I do not experience any problems. I do wash her clothes separately from ours, though. The All Free & Clear has the same ingredients as Dreft and is a WHOLE lot cheaper!

My daughter's pediatrician said not to use any kind of fabric softener on her clothes when she was a baby. She said the fabric softener leaves behind stuff that don't allow the clothes to really breathe and can clog the baby's pores, plus it can be irritating for their skin. She said just to use a baby detergent, not to add softener to the wash, and to dry them in the dryer with no dryer sheet. The baby soap is enough to make the clothes soft anyway, plus that smell is great.

My friend yelled and screamed at me.....BUT I used the same detergent and the same dryer sheets for my baby than I did for us. Only thing I did was use the extra rinse cycle for her clothes and always washed them seperatly. I asked my doctor about it and she said it was mostly hype and over reacting from people and she used the same items as well for her children as her and her husband used. Recommendations are to use the dreft and no fabric softener (ever felt a fleece sleeper without fabic softener? Feels like sandpaper!) but unless your baby shows signs of an irritation.....it doesn't matter! Good Luck either way!!

Don't use dryer sheets on the baby's clothes!!! Dryer sheets have more cases of people alergic to them because they don't rinse like washing machine liquids. Baby's skin is much too sensitive for this.
I'm very sensitive to dryer sheets. My wife didn't know that when we first got married. And I didn't know she picked up a free sample of dryer sheets. She used them on a load of my underwear. Yes, I can laugh about it now.

The dryer sheets could irritate the baby's skin. Downy makes a fabric softener that is free of dyes and perfumes. I use that for my daughters clothes and it has never caused a problem for her. I also always wash her things separate from all the other laundry.

I have always used the same detergent and dryer sheets for my babies as I use for us. I just look for signs that their skin is having a hard time with it. If they do.. I change it for the family. I have only had to do that one time and my skin was having a hard time with the brand too. My babies still have baby soft skin. I know dryer sheets are safe to use.

If the dryer sheet have any sent to them I wouldn't try using them. Because you don't have to worry about having a dryer sheet in the dryer for baby close.
