I know little about the subject but my boyfriend is really into DJs and dance music. I want to get him some equipment but like I said, I don't have a clue and I can't really ask him coz I want it to be a surprise. Can anybody help me out here? What are the basics? I mean what are the bare essentials he would need in order to create music. Turntables, decks, mixers? And what would be extras on top of that i.e. not essential but the next step up. Is there anywhere on-line I could find out what all the different things to do and what would be best to buy for the music he wants to make? Please help.

Well you know what he need. Mixer, 2 turntable . If he like records (vinyl) that would be the best. (technics 1210 is THE classic turntable, Technics mixer are good. Get 4 Channel if you can).
In term of fashion and new equipment, Pioneer CDJ 1000 will be the dream piece all DJ want their hands on.
But it come with a very high price( I don't know you so!!) . For me, it's expencive. But it depend on everyone pocket.
These are equipment to MIX not to MAKE and what DJ need to play in gigs. Make is another matter.

Lightin and atmosphere would also be incredibly important ... As who wants to dance in a brightly lit room even if the dj is good?

Look for second hand gear...

Pick up these in sort of this order.

Smoke machine
UV 4foot portable strip lights a few. (that protect the bulb) or a uv floodlight (more expensive) Poss some flame retardant (may need chemical) back drop or get the material and uv pain and do your own.

NO traffic lights type lights.

Scaners (smart beam lights that scan music) (pref DMX) ie controlable) (scanners are those long black box like ones with mirrors on the end.

Good ones are the one with a sort of barrel /can of mirrors.
Poss two and the means to hang them up say a stand and means to make sure stand dont fall over...(cable tyes and a safety chain may help.

A 'flower' ie spread out in a cone beams) in the middle would go well or a large strobe light (note only for a few secs at a time so epileptics dont fit)

And make sure whatever venue he is in HE has control over lights inc the bar... Therefore club or venue lit by uv lights and disco lights with atmosphere smoke shoing up light beams.

Maybe some red table lights or bulbs for dj areas as red light dont spread.

Then you have nice atmosphere and people dance.

Ideally maybe some extra uvs etc for a chill out corridor or zone.

And later maybe a lazer (usually without smoke and darkness and long venue.

Djing itself is pretty easy just get to know the equipment. As a DJ, you are supposed to keep a good vibe going now a good vibe can change from place to place, so a good DJ will know their crowd, or know how to get to know it pretty quickly. You'll want to learn these down the road - get a big library of music, mainstream stuff and some slightly more edm underground stuff. Always have dance music. - transitioning smoothly between tracks is probably what takes the most skill. - DJing isn't a super hard thing to do, but it is something you need to practice and it takes some crowd reading to know what the people want to hear.

For a basic sysytem, no amplifier or speakers, try http://www.numark.com and have a look at the DJ packages.

I hope this helps.
