In pre-Roman Britain, there were many different tribes occupying the land. All were vying for supremacy and were fighting with one another.
The Romans came and brought Law and Order with them. They built with stone, not wood. Their houses had baths with hot water and central heating.
There were courts of law and magistrates to keep order and justice. The Roman Legions acted as protector of the land and drove out the enemy factions and kept them out by building walls.
By becoming citizens of the Roman Empire, the British were taxed less than those that refused to join. They had the protection of the legions and the laws that governed the land.
The Roman occupation opened up the rest of the world for the British to trade with. Wages and profits were higher than they had ever been. It was a peaceful and prosperous time.

They brought the following to the country:

False teeth
Taps
Chain mail
Cats
Snails
Straight Roads

The locals already had links with the continent but the Romans brought with them an advanced new development in culture, farming and technology which lasted throughout their reign.

However, what is interesting is that after the Romans left the country seemed to slip back and not advance much further.

To quote from the film the life of Brian:

Reg: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!
Xerxes: The aqueduct?
Reg: What?
Xerxes: The aqueduct.
Reg: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
Commando 3: And the sanitation.
Loretta: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?
Reg: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
Matthias: And the roads.
Reg: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--
Commando: Irrigation.
Xerxes: Medicine.
Commandos: Huh? Heh? Huh...
Commando 2: Education.
Commandos: Ohh...
Reg: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
Commando 1: And the wine.
Commandos: Oh, yes. Yeah...
Francis: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh.
Commando: Public baths.
Loretta: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.
Francis: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
Commandos: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
Reg: But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

They ceated the largest and strongest Empire that Europe has ever seen, laying the foundations for Western civilisation, creating the Roman Catholic Church, and setting an example of conquest and subjigation that military leaders would seek to replicate for centuries, from Charlemange of the Franks, to Napoleon and Hitler. They were, indeed, unimaginabley cruel and unjust at times, but the world would be a very different place had they never existed.

presuming you are british, they conquered your country. what did they do for you? nothing! yes of course they introduced fancy roads, laws, aquaducts etc. etc. blah, blah, but the fact is they didn't do it for you, THEY DID IT FOR THEMSELVES!!, for their own profit. the roads brought heavy taxes and the riches of your country to their ports where they traded them for their own profit, the aquaducts brought water to their villas so they could live the good life, they worked the land intensively so they could reap the benefits for themselves, anyone who opposed them was wiped out and their lands and resources taken, ethnic cleansing pure and simple, whole tribes were murdered or sold into slavery, chieftains and kings executed and puppet kings put in their place to ensure that roman laws were obeyed and who were paid very well indeed by their masters. And then after a few hundred years when the economic cost of defending britain against raids by the Irish, Angles, Saxons and others became too great they buggered off again despite the pleas of their puppet kings to stay and help them. when will people wake up to the fact that the romans were the nazis of the ancient world, 'be assimilated or be destroyed' thats the choice they gave you, and you had better give them the right answer because they meant business... and presuming you are british, don't you think it's time that your people stopped simpering over how wonderful the romans were and patting yourselves on the back for being conquered by them and faced the facts? they were bastards and they did nothing for you.
