The ones I recommend for Laptop users who travel are small USB based mouses; Laser mouses are great, but some have the problem of being permanently ON. They chew up batteries like Crazy. Some small Mouses even have the USB wirless connectors that can be clipped in under the mouse housing.

Buy good Microsoft mouse optical wired mouse. It's cheap, robust, doesn't weight a lot, easy to plug and play, works almost everywere. If you are serious gamer try to switch to Laser mouse. If wires bother you or you want to use your mouse as remote control you should check wireless mouse. ANy way try to buy good vendor: Microsoft,Logitech,A4

I personally have always liked trackballs.
But an optical mouse would also be a very good choice. You do not ever have to clean out a ball or anything with those.
